So, Microsoft has announced the Surface Book 3 and it will be releasing on the 5th of June. I personally am very excited about this device. It is a 2-in-1 Laptop with a detachable screen. Just this makes this device worthwhile for many people. But it is still a debatable topic. Some people like the detachable screen, others think it is a gimmick. I am a big fan of this feature. This might be an unpopular opinion but hear me out.
The detachable screen is not as smooth as detaching an iPad from the Magic Keyboard but, it is 2-3 times faster than the previous generation. Also unlike the previous generation where you had to close all the apps using the discrete GPU, the process is now much smoother as the apps using the discrete GPU automatically shift to the Integrated GPU. How Convenient!
Talking about the GPU lets come to the specifications. For the purpose of this blog, I am considering a 15-inch screen. Why? I’ll talk about it later. For the specs, I have chosen the i7 1065G7 model with 32GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and a GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q GPU. I also paired it with a Surface Pen for a total cost of around $2879.
The thing I like the most about the Surface Book is the detachable screen. The detachable screen is a major plus point for me. Why? The versatility. And that is the reason, I paired it with a surface pen. You see, the Surface Book is a device that is supposed to be used in the detached mode every once in a while. That can be for digital art, note-taking or simply watching videos. Although do expect a lower battery life when using the detached mode as that keyboard chassis also contains the extra battery.
The GPU is also inside the keyboard chassis so, do expect a lower graphics performance when using it in the detached mode. But that shouldn’t be a problem as the 10th generation i7 CPU has a very powerful integrated GPU and it should be able to handle any tablet-like task very easily.
The specs are good and they can handle photo editing with the ease and 4K video editing is also quite smooth on the GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q. This is because it is just as powerful as its desktop counterpart. And the GDDR6 memory and 6GB of VRAM are also good. If we talk about gaming then the 1660 Ti is again a great GPU which can handle newer games at 1440p on medium to high settings.
It also comes with a 4K display and 17.5 hours of battery life. With these features, I can see Microsoft targeting creative professionals who also like to game. Although gaming would be a secondary task, it allows you to game up to a respectable amount.
The typing experience is one of the best. It has very less keyboard flex. And the whole chassis itself is very durable. I like everything about the keyboard from the placing of keys to the travel. It just works. Ask anyone who writes a lot which device has the best keyboard and the answer will mostly be a Surface device.
Now for the conclusion, should you buy it? Absolutely. If like me you are a fan of versatile devices and you have a budget for the Surface Book 3, it is the clear choice. With amazing features and powerful specs specifically aimed at creative professionals, it is a very good device. The one thing about this device that I don’t like is the quad-core i7 CPU. At this price point, I would’ve preferred a 6 to 8 core CPU. Also the storage. If you specifically want more storage, for this price I would suggest you go for the 13.5 inches model.
Also, if you are a gamer, don’t buy it. There are many devices out there for gaming. This isn’t one of them. But if you are a writer or a creative professional, then this is one of the best devices you can get on the market right now. I mean not right now but when it will be available. So, we’ve reached the end of the article. If you liked it please share it with other people. And if you think I missed something or made a wrong point, please let me know in the comments.
